Case Study: How We Delivered Affordable Nutrition to Underserved Communities in Colombia

Griffith Foods is dedicated to achieving its 2030 Aspirations, including a focus on serving underserved consumers by: – Providing nutritious, great-tasting, affordable, and accessible products – Developing offerings that aim to promote positive nutrition and health outcomes To deliver on this Aspiration, our Central & South America team created a ready-to-mix nutritious beverage powder to supplement nutrition for the local community

The Challenge

The initiative faced several key challenges: 

  • Underserved Populations: Many families lacked access to affordable, nutrient-rich foods. 
  • Nutritional Gaps: High rates of child malnutrition and limited dietary diversity. 
  • Affordability & Scale: Solutions needed to be cost-effective for food programs and scalable across regions. 

Our Approach

  • Our Nutrition and R&D experts partnered with a local children’s hospital and a feeding program to understand the nutritional needs of members of the community  
  • Griffith Foods developed a portfolio of ready-to-mix dairy-style beverages to provide supplemental nutrition to young children, expectant mothers, families, and the elderly at an affordable cost for the food program 
  • Each product contains protein and micronutrients including calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and vitamins C, D, and B12.  Nutritional content varies by product to meet the diverse needs of these consumers. 

The Results

In Colombia, this initiative is making a measurable impact: 

  • 9,000 children and 2,000 pregnant or nursing mothers receive supplemental nutrition each month 
  • 283,000 servings delivered monthly 
  • Integrated into a food program that supports the city’s Zero Hunger initiative 

Recent reporting showed acute child malnutrition declined from 1.1% to 0.4%. While our product is not the sole factor, it is a meaningful contributor within a broader ecosystem of nutrition interventions. 

Griffith Foods aims to scale this impact across Colombia, expand throughout Central and South America, and replicate this initiative globally to improve nutrition outcomes.
