Case Study: How We Helped Our Customer Launch High-Protein Sauces Without Sacrificing Flavor

Griffith Foods collaborated with a long-standing processor partner to optimize sauces for their retail ready-meal range. We were asked to develop a product solution that meets evolving consumer needs shaped by the rise of GLP-1 medications and the growing demand for nutrient-dense, high-protein options. High-protein products have been popular for years, but demand is surging with the rise of GLP-1 medications, which often encourage consumers to seek high-protein, low-calorie meals that still taste great. We had an opportunity to help our customer lead in a fast-evolving category by delivering a solution that combines culinary craft with nutrition expertise.

The Challenge

The retailer wanted sauces that: 

  • Support high-protein claims on pack by increasing total protein in the meal. 
  • Meet Non-HFSS (non High Fat, Salt and Sugar) standards, creating opportunities to advertise and promote the product within the UK market.  
  • Deliver strong flavor impact to complement high-protein, low-calorie meals. 

The challenge was clear with a need to boost nutrition without compromising taste. 

Our Approach

We partnered closely with the customer to develop the sauce, elevate the overall protein content of the meal and qualify the product for a “high-protein” claim. 

Key actions included: 

  • Protein Integration: Worked beyond the claim level to maximize total protein contribution from sauces. 
  • Flavor First: Developed bold, robust sauces to ensure meals delivered an indulgent and satisfying experience despite calorie constraints. 
  • Compliance: Partnered with our expert regulatory team to ensure all products were non-HFSS, creating an opportunity to unlock marketing and promotions. 

Throughout development, our culinary and nutrition teams collaborated to balance taste, texture, and nutritional integrity without sacrificing flavor for function. 

The Results

  • We developed a range of flavorful sauces that met consumer demand for high-protein, low-calorie options, delivering over 20g of protein per serving in the end product.  
  • All sauces ensured the end products were Non-HFSS, enabling full promotional flexibility. 
  • Customer successfully launched a line of high-protein ready meals into retail.
