At Griffith Foods, we are continuously improving our health and safety program to make our company sites great places to work. We think of health broadly, including mental and physical health, nutrition, and ergonomics of the job, with a focus on prevention. To us, safety is about creating a culture of safety, not just checking boxes.
Our Costa Rica team launched a new health and safety program pilot in FY24 to reduce incidents and improve the culture in the plant. The pilot involved safety training workshops, a new framework with levels of safety, and creating a cross-functional leadership team.
The Costa Rica team focused on the role everyone plays in creating a culture of safety and risk prevention. A leader was identified for each potential safety issue and with colleagues, they created a plan to prevent and mitigate risks. More than 90 people now have special safety roles as part of the new program, and the plant is proud of the results from its first year. Culture is not an automatic switch that can be flipped but a way of working and acting as a team. The Health and Safety Team is excited by the results of the Costa Rica pilot and hopes to expand this program to other sites in the future.
